CIGNA
The CIGNA Company is one of the most prominent health insurers in the country that offers various medical plans which includes among others HMO, PPO and POS. Although they also have other insurance service like dental, life, accident and disability, CIGNA has been in the forefront for health coverage.
Way back in 1792, a group of prominent citizens established the Insurance Company of North America (INA), a company whose main product is geared towards the marine industry. Two years later, it issued its first life policy insuring a sea captain against death during a voyage. On the same year, the Pennsylvania legislature approves a bill to incorporate the INA authorizing the writing of marine, fire and life policies.
In the year 1865, the governor of Connecticut signs a special act incorporating the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG). It later on organizes its Accident Department and began to offer individual accident and health insurance. CG soon expands to other types of insurance that made them popular.
More that a century later, these two companies - INA and CG combined to form CIGNA and selected Philadelphia for its headquarters. Today, CIGNA remains to be the most popular health care provider all over the world. Internationally, the company provides health coverage to employees of multinational companies and sells life, accident and supplemental health insurance in some parts of the EU and Asia.
CIGNA’s awards and recognitions abounds. According to the 2008 Business Insurance Reader Choice Awards, CIGNA is the best managed care organization and has the best employee assistance program. CIGNA HealthCare Call Centers have been certified by J.D. Power and Associates for providing “An Outstanding Customer Service Experience” three years in a row. They were also honored by The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter for their generous support to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through research. These are only a few of CIGNA’s long list of honors.
